Contrary to popular belief creativity needs constraints; they provide the boundaries from which form can take shape.
Creativity arises out of the tension between spontaneity and limitations, the latter (like the river banks) forcing the spontaneity into the various forms which are essential to the work of art or poem. (Rollo May)
Tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty is enhanced when practicing art. Such tolerances are necessary conditions in creating new expressive forms out of what has yet to exist. Tolerance for uncertainty is useful in times of change. Our Modern world is certainly in constant change. With these abilities, change can be apprehended with a focus on new possibilities, instead of becoming a destabilizing force.
Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties. (Erich Fromm)
And finally:
The key question isn’t « What fosters creativity? » But it is why in God’s name isn’t everyone creative? Where was the human potential lost? How was it crippled? I think therefore a good question might be not why do people create? But why do people not create or innovate? We have got to abandon that sense of amazement in the face of creativity, as if it were a miracle if anybody created anything. (Abraham Maslow)
If creativity is innate instead of belonging to the particularly gifted few, than loss of our creative potential is a symptom and has repercussions on our health and well being. Restoring the creative spark in anyone is giving that person the fuel to ignite their life, to give it purpose, meaning and direction. The arts in particular provide many avenues to enhance and transform someones life. Where are you being creative? What sparks your imagination? How are you going about following your ‘bliss’?
